The UK set itself an energy landmark in April 2018 when the entire country’s energy supply was powered without coal for 72 consecutive hours – the first time that had happened since the 1880s.

The coal mine slag heaps have gone, the belching black smoke from power station cooling towers are becoming much rarer. The new energy era is literally changing the country’s landscape.

Gas and nuclear, along with wind, sun and other renewable resources, have filled the gap vacated by coal. And instead of resting on its laurels, the country wants to cement its role as a leader in renewable energy use.

In this film we visit a battery lab in London where the founders are cracking a problem that has persisted for three decades: how to make a battery that’s fit for the future.

We hear what’s driving the home energy storage market and take a look at the smart energy storage systems that are helping Britons lower their electricity bills, increase their energy security and reduce their carbon footprint.
